About Providential Gardener ~ Adult Education

Lifelong learning is no longer optional now that the world has become so complicated. Complex systems enabled by computers and networks  evolve rapidly. Many of today's jobs didn't exist ten years ago. Providential Gardener is developing this website as a reference guide to assist Rhode Islanders who want to get "up to speed" on environmental topics.

One segment of learners, however, is of particular interest to ProvGardener, and that is the adults who have not yet earned a high school diploma and/or haven't mastered English. The number of working-age people in this category is estimated at 80,000, and most of them are reading below 8th grade level. This is a significant percent of the state's population -- no wonder the economy is lagging! This segment has many obstacles to overcome to get their diplomas -- and experts tell us that much more than a high school diploma is necessary to get  higher-paying jobs. It's important that every adult Rhode Islander can contribute to the management of this place, and adults without high school diplomas are the most challenged among us. Not enough is being done yet to provide significant help for them. People are our most precious resource. Educating children is daunting enough, and Rhode Island has a way to go to excel with the current students in preK-12. But let's also do everything possible for every adult learner.
