Communications Coordinator at RIRRC

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation seeks a Communications Coordinator to position coordinate RIRRC’s public information and communications needs across all programs and departments and using a variety of media and platforms. This includes customer service initiatives, internal and external communications, marketing, brand management, internet and social media messaging, community and stakeholder outreach, media and public relations, event planning and RIRRC advertising.

Major Responsibilities and Activities

  • Strategize and manage all media relations. Generate favorable media placements regarding Corporation activities. Leads media relations outreach including developing media strategies for significant business announcements; financial communications; social media communication; press releases, prepping/media training for executives in response to media inquiries, and engaging with all our partners and neighbors.
  • Develop and keep current internal and external communications regarding new or changed policies, practices, or programs.
  • Ensure consistent messaging, content, and voice in communications, presentations, and education materials in order to establish and maintain the RIRRC ‘brand’.
  • Write, edit and produce multiple communications vehicles, including news releases, newsletters, public information materials, annual activities reports and internal communications. Supervise all printing, photography, and graphic design activities.
  • Develop content calendars and maintain website presence across multiple platforms and coordinate improvements with the Education and Outreach Manager and the Director of Public Policy, Programs, and Planning.
  • Plan, create, write and produce (or manage the production of) all advertising, including print, TV, outdoor, online, and radio.
  • Receive, evaluate, traffic, and process public information requests and Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • Support the planning and execution of special events, such as ribbon cutting ceremonies, press conferences, groundbreaking ceremonies, etc.
  • Build and foster long-term working relationships with various organizations, including media, members of the community, elected officials, and stakeholders.
  • Oversee functional disciplines of public affairs and marketing, internal and external communications, and customer service including the oversight of consultants that support the disciplines.
  • Prepare communication, marketing, and community relations strategy and objectives identifying goals and activities that increase visibility, enhance and maintain a positive image and ensure the organization is an active and effective partner to and for the region. Seek out speaking engagements that will add value to organization.
  • Supports developing strategic plans for the organization based on RIRRC’s priorities and objectives and champions the communication to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage vendor contracts under the position’s control.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing skills and verbal communication ability.
  • Five years of professional experience, preferably in one of the following fields: community relations, advertising/marketing, government affairs, customer service administration or public affairs.
  • Minimum of intermediate skill level in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Proficiency in managing content and data analysis on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.; and in managing electronic mailing and distribution lists and services.
  • Operate mouse. Keyboard at a minimum of 50 wpm.
  • Read, write, and speak English. Demonstrated strong English writing skills required.
  • Professional and clear telephone demeanor.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and maintain composure in difficult customer service situations.
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships with employees, vendors, and many constituencies. Frequent contacts with peers, superiors, customers, vendors, and public stakeholders to provide or obtain information and updates. Must be comfortable making presentations to groups of various sizes and demographics.
  • Class 10 (standard) driver’s license required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.

Working Conditions
Office working conditions with potential minimal exposure to the elements.

Little physical exertion is required.
